A shipwreck separates twins Viola and Sebastian on the coast of Illyria. Disguising herself as a young man named Cesario, Viola enters the service of Duke Orsino, who is hopelessly in love with Lady Olivia. Orsino sends Cesario to woo Olivia on his behalf, but Olivia falls in love with Cesario instead – unaware he is actually Viola. Meanwhile, Viola secretly loves Orsino.
Comic subplots involve Olivia’s pompous steward, Malvolio, who is tricked into believing Olivia loves him, and the antics of Sir Toby Belch, Sir Andrew Aguecheek, and the witty fool, Feste.
The confusion peaks when Sebastian arrives, causing cases of mistaken identity. In the end, the twins are joyfully reunited, Viola’s true identity is revealed, and love matches are made: Orsino with Viola, and Olivia with Sebastian.

In Athens, young lovers Hermia and Lysander run away to marry against her father’s wishes, pursued by Demetrius (who also loves Hermia) and Helena (who loves Demetrius). In the forest, mischievous fairies led by Oberon and Puck use magic to cause confusion, making the lovers fall in and out of love with the wrong people. Meanwhile, a group of amateur actors rehearses a play, and Puck transforms one of them, Bottom, by giving him a donkey’s head – causing the fairy queen Titania to fall in love with him under a spell. Eventually, the magic is undone, true loves are restored, and everyone returns to Athens for a joyful triple wedding.
